Kevin McGarry is committed to tracking the continued global development of the art world. He reviews many international exhibitions and established biennials, and has also gone to places where there are virtually no artists, only money: Aspen, Monaco, Punta Del Este, and Grand Rapids, Michigan. He writes about these locations as counterpoints to artistic communities, which illustrate how power mechanisms work throughout the entire art world.

McGarry has written about art for 4 Columns, Art Agenda, Art in America, Artforum, Artforum.com, Artnet, Flash Art, frieze, Kaleidoscope, Modern Weekly China, Mousse, PIN-UP, T: The New York Times Style Magazine, and others. In 2008 he co-founded Migrating Forms film festival, which now takes place annually at BAMCinématek in Brooklyn. He was editor of Rhizome from 2004–05.
